"Mike Martz also wasn't Dick Vermeil's first choice as offensive coordinator last year. In fact, Vermeil wanted to promote tight end coach Mike White from his own staff to the position, but Rams president John Shaw wouldn't have it. Shaw got Vermeil focused on somebody who could restore Isaac Bruce to Pro Bowl form; the natural choice was Martz, who had been the Rams receivers coach under Rich Brooks prior to joining Norv Turner in Washington when Vermeil succeeded Brooks in St. Louis."

I can give you the details if you want.

But the way he frames that story, he gets a lot wrong, and scrambles some things up.

We know this because the OC hiring process was written about in detail as it was happening.

Please do.....all I've heard or remember hearing is that it was Shaw's mandate to DV to go get Martz.

Glad you asked.First, the process actually starts in August of 98. That far back. It was clear at that point that Rhome, the then OC, was in trouble with Vermeil Early in the season DV even took over the playcalling. He had to give it back because it was too much. But you don't take over the playcalling with a coordinator you're happy with. So it was absolutely no surprise when DV fired Rhome just after the season ended.

When DV and Shaw met, Shaw had one requirement---DV had to look outside the organization for his OC. No internal promotions. Shaw also recommended Martz to interview. DV in fact interviewed 2 guys, Matt Cavanagh and Martz.

I am getting ahead a bit. At one point before the interviews, DV wondered out loud whether or not it was better to promote from within. Shaw got ahold of him and said, we have this deal--you have to look outside. So he did.

At the time, one reason DV gave for choosing Martz was because both Rhome and Martz ran a Coryell system. Cavanagh ran a WCO. DV said, it was an advantage to keep the same system.

At no point in the process was there a mandate on who to hire--there was an agreement that DV had to look outside the organization, but DV was free not to accept Shaw's recommendation to interview Martz, and he was free to pick who he wanted between Martz and Cavanagh after he did interview them.

The whole Banks/Green thing is another long story in its own right.
