There aren't that many head coaches who are Belichick types, who can do what he does. So from that perspective it is worth it for Stan to consider the GM approach with his next hire.
I am not a big fan of going the "hot coordinator" route, seems to me the percentage of hitting is pretty low as many of these guys need a lot of patience as they learn the ropes and the hard lessons. Prefer someone who's run the whole show even if it means a college head coach, or someone who has failed once as a head coach at the least, but at this point all I care about is it's someone who will give us an edge offensively. The OCs in Pittsburgh and NE come to mind there, I have to think both give us that advantage and we'll need to strap in and hope they develop in those other ways.
But I also would not rule out Saban, who incidentally might be a guy Stan sees as a "Belichick type." Risky, but could also bear enormous dividends if Nick comes in with something to prove as I do think he can win at this level. It's gonna be an interesting offseason for us, either way.
