its pretty hard to make the argument that either is better given that goff hasnt actually taken a snap in the regular season. if goff comes in and lights it up then all of this "controversy" goes away and the narrative then becomes how smart the rams were for letting goff sit, watch and get acclimated to the nfl.
I guess we just see this one far differently, PHD.
The very fact that Goff hasn't yet taken an NFL snap is the whole point of this discussion, isn't it?
Hence the value of the Vermiel piece, and why I shared it.
Three things occur to me as possibilities here.
1) S&F picked the "wrong" QB at #1 overall. A career threatening mistake, btw.
2) OR the Ram coaching staff is relatively inept at QB development. At least relative to the Eagle staff.
3) Or both.
None of the above give me a warm and fuzzy feeling, frankly.
And no, it's NOT too early to be asking these questions, IMO.
If you don't list all the real possibilities then you can't make a real choice.
1. S/F picked the wrong qb (not based on what I have seen of Goff they haven't
2. The Rams are the only team in the league, in fact one of the few in NFL history, that actually have coaches who can't coach an NFL qb even at a basic level. Even though Keenum is playing fine in spite of his obvious physical limitations and even though it's obvious Mannion made tremendous strides from his rookie summer to now.
3. The Rams knowing full well that Goff had a lot to learn about being an NFL starter said from the beginning, the day they picked him, that they would be patient and not force it. They're fine with that because they can still play to win now while being patient with him.
I obviously choose 3.
And...3 is a real possibility. You may not choose it for whatever reason but it IS one of the possibilities you have to list IF you are going to have a realistic list.
....
I know I'm gonna regret this, zn, but here goes, anyway...
1) What, exactly, have you seen of Goff through 4 games? He has yet to take his first snap.
2) Not saying that the Ram coaches CAN'T coach an NFL QB. That's hyperbole of the first order. I AM saying that they haven't yet developed the #1 overall pick to the point that they can put him in a game, much less start him. Meanwhile, at least 3 other staffs have not only started rookie QB's from that same class, but won with them. You say that Keenum is playing fine. He's not playing fine. But he is playing juuuuust well enough that the Rams have won 3 squeakers despite having one of, if not THE worst O's in the league through 4 games. We've been outscored YTD. We lose TOP each week. Those are both on our O. Without our D and ST, we are 0-4 this year.
3) This point has some merit. Fisher has the luxury of being ultra patient with Goff thanks to Keenum, the D, and the ST. But he's playing Russian Roulette if he is counting on continuously winning with this current O. Sooner or later, our D and/or our ST will fail to make those "difference making" plays at critical moments.
To summarize...
The jury is still out on whether Goff was the correct pick. So far it appears doubtful and the clock IS ticking.
The jury is also out with regard to whether Fisher and his staff can develop a rookie QB within a reasonable time. So far, that one isn't looking so good, either.
