Bill Walsh drafted Joe Montana in the 3rd round, not #1 overall. Walsh did not think Montana was good enough to draft in the first round, never mind #1 overall. So obviously Walsh was gonna go slow with him.
If Walsh was gonna spend 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds on a QB, you better believe he's gonna be good enough and ready enough to start from day one, especially with Walsh coaching him.
A guy Walsh did draft in the first round, #5 overall, Greg Cook, did start from day one under Walsh when he was the OC in Cincy. And Cook was a phenom until he got hurt.
I have no doubt in my mind that if Walsh drafted a QB #1 overall, he would be playing from day one, as he has already proven with Cook.
When you put all the pieces together on the Goff situation there is no way it looks good. Goff was either the wrong pick or the plan and coaching isn't good enough.
What Vermeil is saying is that he doesn't know if Goff has it or not, but he does see an issue with the Rams environment for developing him. And I'm saying I see it the same way as DV, and just hope Goff is good enough to, as DV said, drive that bus over the Rams coaching staff.
But you guys can go on discrediting Vermeil or twisting his words, I choose to listen carefully to what he says.
