...how clueless supposed experts on football can be. It was indeed clueless to go for two. One of the other examples of cluelessness that really stuck out in my memory is how to use timeouts late in games. On more than one occasion, I was watching a game in which the announcers commented on the use or non-use of timeouts when the opposing team had the lead and the ball late in a game. They claimed that you need to save a timeout for the end of the game in case you need to get your FG team out there. This demonstrates a total lack of reasoning ability. Which of the following is the better strategy? Save your timeouts and allow the opposing team to take as much time as possible off the clock? Use the timeouts to prevent the other team from taking time off the clock and then do what you can to save time if you get the ball back? I attribute such thinking to a type of dullard personality that prevails in football, sometimes even to high levels. To an extent, this may be due to head injuries, but it could also have a lot to do with the fact that football isn't the most intellectual profession. There have been refreshing exceptions, such as Bill Walsh, Dick Vermeil, and Bill Belichick, but there are lots of people like Fisher who are basically just former players who don't have a clue.
