One day the NFLPA and the NCAA put restrictions on what a helmet "can do" upon impact... just as the PGA puts restrictions on what the golf ball can do. ... Only when a player knows he could seriously hurt himself if he tries for a helmet-to-helmet kill shot will this change. If he knew his headgear wouldn't survive the collision, he'd instantly learn the value of shoulder tackling.
Some time down the road, we'll consider what kind of carnage today's shoulder pads can create.
Amen. And interesting comparison with the golf ball.
(Incidentally, the governing body in golf is not the PGA, but a collaboration between the USGA and the Royal and Ancient in Britain. If only the PGA had its own ball! 30 years ago, Jack Nicklaus was calling for the shorter ball for pros. No one listened, and the result is a proliferation of courses only pros can play which have to be stretched even further every half decade!)
