There was some talk about 'leather helmets' being safer than those worn today. It never got a lot of attention but it wasn't a 'fringe' discussion either. There was a medical study presented as evidence but whether it was a 'legit' study or some national enquirer version I don't know. There WAS supposed to be further medical study but I do not recall it going anywhere.
My opinion - there is no way in hell I would know which is safer. My 'gut' feeling is todays helmets are HARD... and probably inflict more injury than they prevent. BUT... I would think they better protect from concussions... and that trumps all.
