The collisions in the sport are directly correlated to the advancement of technology of the gear.

Take away the facemask and players will feel less invincible. A few broken teeth, smashed noses and broken jaws, no more leading with your face to make a tackle. Now, there go the collisions. No more ESPN Highlights........Football enforcing rules is great. Eliminating helmet to helmet is almost impossible.
