Which brings up another point. Unlike the Rams defense in that game, which was vanilla and all about finding out who to cut and who to keep, the Dallas defense ran all sorts of things at the Rams.

And you can bet the farm the Rams OL did not prep for that. They just went out and executed their plays. There was no prep to watch for stunts, delayed blitzes, and fake blitzes etc.

What that means is that Dallas gave the Rams OL...and qb...some valuable film to study.

Meanwhile the Rams D was not doing anything remotely like that to Dallas.

Those are all good points.

But I wonder how much the Rams gain by not spicing things up on defense. It's not like they have any magic plays that no one has ever seen before. Williams has been doing this stuff for years. And it may be a good idea to try some stuff out and actually practice it so its working by the first game.

Well for one thing I think the way the Rams play when they do spice it up it is to make it gameplan and opponent specific. That means film study to set it up, which I guess they don't want to take the time to do in the preseason.

The other is, the simpler you keep it the more you expose who can and cannot play. The Rams played a lot of different defenders. Keeping it basic means forcing those guys to simply play straight up and so you get a clearer picture of how they do when the bullets fly.

Dallas on the other hand has no defense UNLESS they spice things up.
