I actually think that you can learn by sitting also. Sean Mannion is an example, last year he wasn't ready by any stretch of the imagination. He threw 7 passes in the regular season and he even said how tough it was.
The entire offseason and maturity, he looked pretty good to me, looked like he learned a lot by sitting on the sidelines last year.
