McVay's offense is going to be pass-first, pass to run, offense. McVay is a match up guy. He's talked about it. So he wants a variety of skill players to take advantage of a what a D will give them. Thus the want of a pass catching FB.
The FB they selected is all about passing. Watched some video and that kid can really catch the ball. Very natural pass catcher. OK blocker but nothing special from what I saw.
Watched Gerald Everett's Combine video. Take off the TE jersey and you would think he was just a large WR. He runs like a WR; catches like a WR. Accelerates like a WR. Bends corners like a WR. Very fluid athlete and I don't care what size his hands are; he catches everything is sight and makes it look so smooth and easy.
Everyone seems in love with Josh Reynolds. Again, a very fluid guy; natural catcher. Not exceptional speed, but he is so looooooong that he is going to present some real problems for average sized CBs. We'll have to see how he does against NFL CBs that are his size or a little less and play him physicallly. Interestingly, I think it was Daniel Jeremiah who brought up that he runs a wicked slant route that is nearly unstoppable. What a great combo: a deep threat on every play, who can simply take a step and run a hard slant depending on the coverage. Play off; it is slants until you play up. Play up, and his good speed and length can have you in big trouble on deeper throws.
Cooper Kupp. Anyone who can pan this pick......well....I just don't understand. What more can anyone do? He dominates whoever lines up against him. He has everything but a fast 40 time (so did Jerry Rice). And even then, watch him play and he looks like one of the fastest players on the field. It's his quickness.
I fully expect to see Goff averaging around 35 pass attempts per game. Would not at all surprise me to see him approach 50 throws in a game or two. McVay is not going to bang his head against a wall running Gurley and getting 3 yards if the other team is packing 8 in the box and sometimes more. And I think Gurley is going to be a big part of that pass game. After rewatching some games from last year, I couldn't believe how little he was utilized as a pass catcher and how good he was at it.
I don't think for a minute that moving Havenstein to OG is about the run game. The Rams are now putting 4 natural OTs out there on the Oline and it isn't to run block. I predict GRob is going to do OK at RT. Lots of guys who can't make it at LT wind up being pretty decent RTs.
This is going to be a complete 180 from what we've seen Fisher try to do (power running, run first, run to pass offense). And if Goff is anywhere near what Fisher and Snead thought of him, he'll do OK in McVay's offense.
While I find it unlikely that the Rams can exceed .500 this season, they will likely be a lot more entertaining to watch.
