Why is it so hard to accept that once a guy gets to the NFL, or even moves to a different team, there are positions that suit him better than others? Happens with WRs. Happens with Corners. Happens with Olinemen ALL the time, perhaps more than at any other position.
But it is not an issue of: Can't play this position, but can play that one. It's which is better, which combo gives the best overall unit performance, and which offers the best growth opportunity for the younger players.
I don't know exactly what the reasons are that a HC who has been called one of the top 2 or 3 best coaches in the NFL has looked at film, watched the guys play up close and personal, and watched how others around him respond, and now thinks that it MIGHT... I repeat MIGHT... produce better results if he stayed at OG, while a 2nd contract OG moves to Center. I can guess, but that's all. But it's not a matter of failure vs. success.
McVay is a risk taker and an innovator. He at times plays his position as HC fast and loose. He does things that the book says you shouldn't (like using your starting RB as your PR) or running your offense nearly exclusively out of 11 personnel, or using your WRs as mini-TEs, etc. Will it come back to bite him, or will it be so successful that it starts a trend? We can all pony up and place our bets, but as for me, despite my personal feelings or unease I will NEVER bet against McVay because he will win the bet 90% of the time.
