Re: Penix - Not Rams Related (well not directly)

I'm all in favor of succession planning, but this move is still a head-scratcher for me.

I'm not certain, but I thought that I read that Cousin's contract has $100M guaranteed with a no-trade clause in it. I can't say for sure in today's QB market if that's a good or bad deal for teams. But assuming that he plays halfway decent (I think that KC is a darn good QB ), I think that it'd be hard to see Penix seeing the field for any extended amount of time for at least 2 or 3 seasons.

I believe that most of the QB's drafted this year should sit for a year and Penix is no different. But for 3 years? I could maybe understand if you had a starter like Aaron Rodgers who rubs people the wrong way, but KC is a good guy by all accounts that I've seen.

Moving forward with your question...

I'd sure hate to give up...what - a 3rd round pick to the Falcons just be in a Jordan Love/Tua situation where you have to (potentially) make a $250M contract extension decision on a QB that doesn't have much of a track record either due to no PT or injury.

I mean...look at the Steelers. I think that they'll need to bench Russell Wilson midway through the season to get an idea of what they have in Justin Fields. And then run the risk of losing him (or going bankrupt) should he show a tiny bit of promise.

ETA: If I were the Rams, I'd probably look to swing another deal with Detroit for a QB. In the 2023 draft, the Lions selected Hendon Hooker in the 3rd round. I believe that he was a consensus 1st round pick, but fell due to a knee injury suffered late in his last college season. But with Goff signed to a new long-term deal, he's not likely to see the field anytime soon either. Hooker might be had for a late-round pick where he could come in after next season to sit/learn/listen behind Stafford (who might be ready to hang things up after the 2025 season). Get Hooker in the locker room to evaluate his work ethic and such. If he passes the eyeball test, sign him to a reasonable extension. If he doesn't then you haven't lost out on much.
