So, you’re saying that NFL gets paid by networks by individual games broadcast and not by the season? That doesn’t feel right to me.
You are right, the networks play the NFL by the season. But using Amazon Prime as an example, they bid on an 18 game Thursday night season. If it becomes a 17 week season in the middle of their contract then they would undoubtedly get a rebate from the league.
You have been sounding the bell on an 18 game season for a long time. Why would the NFL want to do that? One reason - they would make more money. And how would that happen? Easy - networks would pay more to broadcast a 19 or 20 game season than they would for an 18 game season.
Well, it works both ways. A 17 game season is worth less to the networks than an 18 game season. And an 18 game season is worth less than a 19 or 20 game season.
So we’re actually on the same page. NFL is paid by season.
And we agree that if and when season changes from 17 games to 18 then TV contract would have to be renegotiated at once.
