Re: How serious are the Matthew Stafford contract rumors?

May 02, 2024 08:36AM
It seems that the issue was more about the possibility of getting cut after this season. Once he plays this year there's no guaranteed money on his deal, making that a distinct (but unlikely) possibility.

Stafford has asked the Rams to commit to him beyond this year, and it seems to me that it's nothing more than that.

I think the Rams will do that by guaranteeing the $27M salary that's already on the books for 2025. That wouldn't cost the Rams a dime as long as they planned on Stafford playing in 2025. And it satisfies Stafford's request.

The Rams might also guarantee his 2026 salary of $26M, possibly based on Stafford's availability in '25.

And while they're at it, they might even add 1 or 2 non-guaranteed years to the deal.

What I would do if I was in charge:

  • Guarantee $27M for 2025
  • Guarantee $26M for 2026 if Stafford is available for at least 13 games in 2025
  • Add two years ('27 & '28) for something in the $40M to $42M range, not guaranteed.
