I appreciate the well thought out write up. This wouldn't be the first time a front office was scouting one guy and his teammate jumps off the screen garnering attention. I am now curious if both Newton and Fiske were both available would the Rams have still gone Fiske because of chemistry and camaraderie? Is it that their games mesh better together? I love the position and have no problem at all with drafting Fiske, it was just that around Rams pick time Newton, who was rated as the higher prospect in most of the periodicals that I saw was still available, he went 3 spots before the Rams got Fiske, plus some say that the Rams overpaid a little for Fiske, would that payment have been enough to get Newton? Fiske might turn out to be the better prospect and I have just made the mistake of wanting the highest rated DE/Edge and the highest rated DT in both of my draft periodicals. I like the pairing up plan but don't see why Verse and Newton couldn't have worked in that way just as well as Fiske and Verse did. Some questioned if the Rams would take Newton at 19 so the idea that we could have traded up and gotten him around 35 excited me.
Hard to answer your question without insight into Rams board and strategy. But I will say this.
Rams have their own ‘different’ methodology in evaluating player fits for their specific desires. Examples are Young and Turner from just last year. Clearly Rams did a better job of evaluating these guys for their system than every other team.
My point is that I now trust them in evals because of their recent track record. I suspect that Fiske might prove to be the pick of the litter for Rams on DL. Stay tuned.
