Drake Stoops got a scholarship. Finally. All the OU walk-on receiver did last season was catch pretty much anything thrown at him, including the biggest touchdown of them all in overtime against Texas. He blocked with relentlessness. He ran pre-snap motion with abandon. He earned the scholarship Sooner coach Lincoln Riley awarded him after the spring game a couple weeks ago. Now, did Stoops need it? Not financially. Stoops, of course, is the son of legendary OU coach Bob Stoops. People who portend they know such things have estimated the net worth of the elder Stoops to be somewhere between $10 million and $20 million. Jeff Bezos, he's not, but Stoops probably isn't clipping coupons or hitting yard sales. Drake getting a scholarship doesn't change his family's finances a ton - but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve it. "I know it meant a great deal to him," Riley said on Thursday on a Zoom call. "There's occasionally families that are fortunate and well off and maybe the monetary aspect of it is not a big deal. "But it was a big, big deal to that kid, no question." - Daily Oklahoman

As the Sooners entered a fourth extra period against Texas, Drake Stoops made the type of play he always envisioned himself making in a college uniform. He broke free, caught a pass from OU quarterback Spencer Rattler and raced into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown that broke a tie and put OU ahead by six on Saturday. "Growing up I definitely dreamed about moments like this," said Stoops, son of Bob and nephew of Mike. "... To be able to make a play like that for this team and a team from my hometown and all that, it's absolutely unbelievable. I prayed for times like this." OU ultimately won 53-45 at the Cotton Bowl and Stoops finished with 20 yards receiving on two catches - he lost a few yards on the first one. When it was his time, though, Stoops stepped up. Drake Stoops has made plenty of plays within Norman's city limits. He starred at Norman North High School before walking on to the program his father, Bob Stoops, coached from 1999-2016. Drake's needed a couple of seasons to become more of a regular in Oklahoma's receiving rotation. And last Saturday against Kansas State, he caught his first career touchdown as a Sooner. OU quarterback Spencer Rattler threw a 32-yard pass to Stoops during the opening play of the second quarter. Stoops, who's listed at 5-foot-9, went vertical to catch the toss just in front of the goal line and muscled his way into the end zone to give the Sooners a 14-0 lead.
Stoops finished the day with a team-best 93 yards on three catches, including a 51-yard grab late in the third quarter that set up Seth McGowan to punch in a 5-yard score that gave OU a 35-14 lead. The Sooners ultimately let their advantage slip away through a series of unfortunate events. And lost along with OU's dominant performance through the first two-and-a-half quarters of the game was a breakout performance for Stoops. "He's been huge," OU coach Lincoln Riley said. "It was important for us. It was definitely a spark to get him back. (Receiver has) been one of the positions that we've been hit hardest. We're playing without a lot of people there. OU redshirt sophomore Drake Stoops made a couple of impressive catches on Saturday. Stoops had a 32-yard grab via Rattler that provided the Sooners with their second touchdown against Kansas State - it also marked his first career touchdown reception. Stoops, the son of former OU head coach Bob Stoops, also had a 51-yard catch that put OU within five yards of the end zone during the third quarter. Drake Stoops didn’t allow himself to get upset after not receiving an invite to the 2024 NFL Combine.

“I can’t allow myself to get mad, sad, anything about it because I know I’m going to have an opportunity at Pro Day,” Stoops said. “… At the end of the day, it’s still an opportunity just like the combine.”

All Stoops has ever looked for is an opportunity. As a 5-foot-10, 175-pound high school senior given no stars from ESPN and On3 and ranked the No. 217 wide receiver nationally by 247Sports, Stoops received one Power Five offer before walking on at Oklahoma.

Six years, 1,876 yards and an All-Big 12 First Team later, being an under the radar high school prospect didn’t deter him from making the most of his time with the Sooners.

Now, Stoops will likely fall into the late rounds or go undrafted in the looming 2024 NFL Draft, but will be complacent with whatever chance he gets with an NFL team.

“Leading up to the draft, I’ll be at peace,” Stoops said after his OU Pro Day performance. “Whatever happens is going to happen. God has a plan, and it’s not really up to me. Whether it’s drafted or undrafted, I think an opportunity will arise, and that’s all that matters.

“I mean, shoot, I walked onto Oklahoma and now I’m sitting here talking to you guys. So at the end of the day, all I need is an opportunity.”

Stoops referenced three receivers who were in similar positions entering the NFL Draft when asked who he models his game after — Raiders receiver Hunter Renfrow (5th round selection) and retired Super Bowl-winning receivers Julian Edelman (7th round selection) and Danny Amendola (undrafted).
