Other than the fact he's recovering from shoulder surgery, Kenny Logan Jr. has enjoyed the fact he's back with Kansas football for one last year. Logan has found himself soaking in certain moments as he's been able to walk around campus. Logan, who'll be a senior safety again for the Jayhawks in 2023, has been able to be around his Kansas teammates once more during what is set to be his last spring ball with the program. Even the opportunities to walk into Allen Fieldhouse to watch some basketball have stuck out to him. But just because Logan could dwell on the fact he has to make his way back from injury, in his fifth and final year playing college football, doesn't mean he is.
It doesn't mean his limited availability will keep him from trying to improve as the team's spring session continues. Logan is trying to live in the moment as it all transpires. "Really, just get better off the field," Logan said when asked about his goals. "Become a better football player. Become a better leader, and really like a coach. Just try to make sure that I'm influencing the guys around me to get better, pushing myself, challenging myself mentally to make sure that I'm staying focused and locked in and in tune with everything going on." The goals Logan has for this spring came both from his own desires and that of the coaching staff. Those discussions have played a part in what he's focusing on. Whether it's rehab or watching film or something else, Logan is committed to improving. - Topeka Capital Journal

Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. always figured he would leave KU after the 2022 season. But last week, after a fair amount of reflection, Logan decided to stay for one more season. He announced his decision to return to KU for his final season of college eligibility in a video on social media. On Monday, during the program's pre-Liberty Bowl media day, Logan shared what went into the decision. "I felt like it was the best thing for me, and it was a chance to come back and help this program," He said. "I saw what we did this year and I know there's a lot more we still can do." Asked specifically what he was deciding between, Logan said simply, "Here or going to the NFL." As it turns out, the NFL can wait.
Logan has been a tackling machine during the past two seasons with the Jayhawks. In 2021, he led the Big 12 in tackles, with 113 - the most by a safety in the entire NCAA - and this year, with a better supporting cast around him, Logan recorded a team-best 96 tackles and also snatched two interceptions, with four pass break-ups. Logan said he talked with his teammates, KU coach Lance Leipold and his family about the decision before making the final call. And he said Leipold's very public desire to have him back with the program next season played an important role in the final call. "That meant a lot, because me and coach's relationship was really strong," Logan said Monday. "So, to hear him say that, to hear him want to coach me one more time, was definitely exciting." - Lawrence Journal World

12/19/22 - SS Kenny Logan Jr., rSr/2024, Kansas, 5-11, 209 (DS#21 SS) + More +

Kenny Logan Jr. announced Friday he will return to Kansas in 2023 for his fifth season of college football. Logan, a senior safety for the Jayhawks in 2022, had a few different options when it came to what's next after this year. The veteran talent could have turned pro, or even chosen to play his last year of eligibility with another program. But in a video he posted on Twitter he said he's staying in Lawrence. "Jayhawk nation, for four years you made a kid from North Florida feel at home," Logan said. "You packed the Booth and helped us get this thing rolling. But I came to Kansas to turn around the program, and we're just getting started. "I have one more year, and I'll be playing right here in Lawrence, Kansas. Rock Chalk."
Logan's decision adds further depth to a secondary that figures to bring back more players who'll be upperclassmen next year, like safeties Marvin Grant and O.J. Burroughs and cornerbacks Cobee Bryant and Kalon Gervin. It'll create more competition for playing time, both on defense and on special teams. Logan may not have had quite as successful a season individually in 2022 compared to 2021 in coach Lance Leipold's first year at the helm, but he is once again leading the team in tackles. He's been a part of an effort that's propelled the Jayhawks to their first bowl game since 2008. Kansas (6-6, 3-6 Big 12) also has more wins this season, overall and in conference play, than Logan's first three years in Lawrence combined. Leipold wanted Logan to come back. So did defensive coordinator Brian Borland. And both coaches are getting their wish, as preparation continues for the Liberty Bowl matchup on Dec. 28 against Arkansas (6-6, 3-5 SEC). - Topeka Capital Journal

Alabama reclaimed No. 1 from Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll in one of the closest votes in the recent years, and six teams — including Kansas — made their season debut on Sunday. The Crimson Tide received 25 first-place votes and 1,523 points in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, two points more than the Bulldogs. Georgia received 28 first-place votes to become the first team since Alabama in November 2019 to have the most first-place votes but not be No. 1. The Tide was No. 2 behind LSU that year, with 21 first-place votes to the Tigers' 17. The last time there was a two-point margin between Nos. 1 and 2 was Nov. 1, 2020, when Clemson was ahead of Alabama. There have been three other polls with a two-point margin at the top since 2007. Ohio State remained third, but the Buckeyes also gained some ground on the top two, getting 10 first-place votes.
The Crimson Tide started the season at No. 1, but the defending national champion Bulldogs took the top spot away from their Southeastern Conference rivals after Week 2 when Alabama needed a late field goal to beat Texas. The Bulldogs remain unbeaten but needed a fourth-quarter rally to beat four-touchdown underdog Missouri on Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Tide managed to pull away from Arkansas in the second half without Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Young sprained his throwing shoulder in the first half and missed most of the game in Fayetteville, Arkansas. No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Southern California all won and held their places this week, though the Wolverines and Tigers are now separated by just three points. No. 7 Oklahoma State, followed by Tennessee, Mississippi and Penn State, round out the top 10. The rest of the AP Top 25 got a major overhaul after 10 ranked teams lost, five to unranked opponents. That cleared the way for seven teams to move into the rankings this week, most notably No. 19 Kansas. The Jayhawks are ranked for the first time since Oct. 18, 2009, which was the longest drought for a team currently in a Power Five conference. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Kenny Logan Jr., Kansas,...Logan, who was named to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team earlier this month, was a second-team all-conference player last year and led all safeties nationally with 113 tackles. He also led the Big 12 in tackles and had 79 solo tackles, which ranked third in the country among all players. He played in all 12 games for the Jayhawks in 2021, and finished with four tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, six pass breakups and one interception to go with his 113 tackles. Logan finished the 2021 season as the only player in the country to have at least 113 tackles, six pass breakups and multiple forced fumbles on the year. He set a career-high in tackles at TCU with 15 and became the first Kansas defensive back since Chris Harris Jr., in 2009 to have at least 15 tackles and multiple tackles-for-loss in the same game. - Kansas Football

Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. plays against TCU during the second half of a game on Nov. 20, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas. After a season in which Kansas' Kenny Logan Jr. led all safeties in Power 5 conferences with 113 tackles, he has his sights set higher as a senior. "I want to try to lead the NCAA in interceptions and try to lead the conference in interceptions," Logan said. Logan was reliable on the back end of the Jayhawks' defense last season, with only Kent State's Dean Clark, who had 116 tackles, finishing with more among FBS safeties. He made 79 tackles by himself and had four for a loss and was a second-team All-Big 12 player after the season. That led to his selection Monday to the watch list for the Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back.
Intercepting passes is a different skill than making tackles, especially for a player who had just one interception last season and had two the year before. But Logan's boast, made during Big 12 football media days earlier this month, comes from the ideas that he broke up six passes last season and that he feels more confident in his defensive teammates. Kansas junior safety Kenny Logan Jr. intercepts the ball against Texas Tech. Kansas fell 41-14 Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021. "I don't want as many tackles this year because we have great linebackers that came in, so I don't feel like I'm going to have that many tackles," Logan said. - Lawrence Journal World

Kenny Logan Jr. has a smile on his face, and his right hand raised in the air. Standing on the field inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, last week, Logan is aiming to take a turn at asking his Kansas football teammate a question. It's the Big 12 Conference's media days for football, and sophomore running back Devin Neal is in the midst of answering questions from reporters. Logan, a senior safety, begins to grill - not really - Neal. "Who would be the best player on KU's defense," Logan asks. "Best player on KU's defense? I would probably say (super-senior defensive lineman) Caleb Sampson," says Neal, deadpan, before smiling as he continues, "Nah, I'm playing Kenny, you got it." "Who would be the hardest person to get by on KU's defense?" Logan presses, smiling still. "Kenny Logan," Neal responds, before laughing and moving on. 'That's just Kenny being Kenny' In all, the exchange lasts only about 30 seconds during a day that has athletes and coaches from various Big 12 teams talking about the months ahead.
If only for a brief moment, it breaks up a setting where the questions can become repetitive at times. And, as should likely be expected, Logan is the one involved. Because, among the Jayhawks set to play for head coach Lance Leipold this fall, there might not be a bigger personality than Logan. And don't just take a teammate's word for it, like junior quarterback Jalon Daniels. Logan feels that way, too. "Just because I'm always outgoing," Logan said, after picking himself. "I always like to have fun. I'll pick, mess with, anybody on the team, and they know that's just Kenny being Kenny. So, I would say definitely me. I mess with coach Leipold. I mess with coach Leipold when he's down. I mess with (director of sports performance) coach (Matt Gildersleeve). I'll mess with anybody just to brighten up their day." - Topeka Capital Journal

Kenny Logan Jr. is still gaining attention for what he accomplished last season. The Kansas senior, whose 113 tackles were the most in the conference by a safety, was selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team on Wednesday. He was the only player on the Jayhawks recognized by the conference, which named 29 players, including five defensive backs, to a first and a second team. Logan, an All-Big 12 second-team player last season, also forced two fumbles, recovered one, had an interception and broke up six passes.
He had a season-high 15 tackles in the 31-28 loss at TCU on Nov. 20 and followed that with 14 tackles in the finale, a 34-28 home loss to West Virginia on Nov. 27. He also finished with at least 10 tackles in three other games last season. A starter since 2020, Logan is expected to resume that role this fall for the Jayhawks, though the back end of the secondary will look different than it did a year ago. - Lawrence Journal World

The University of Kansas athletic department has joined forces with Altius Sports Partners for its name, image and likeness initiatives, KU Athletic Director Travis Goff announced Monday. The partnership, which is centered around Altius as a consultant for best practices in the NIL space, was announced by Altius late last week. It does not replace KU's deal with Sixth Man Strategies, rather opens a door for Altius to work with Sixth Man Strategies, and others, to provide NIL opportunities for KU's student-athletes. Sixth Man Strategies - and, later, 12th Man Strategies for KU football - has been handling KU's men's basketball NIL opportunities since the NCAA first began allowing athletes to profit on NIL last July.
According to the Altius release, "the partnership is designed to maintain (KU's) position on the cutting edge in the changing collegiate environment. The Altius Sports team will provide coaches and staff with educational workshops and resources targeting areas such as group licensing, managing external partnerships, and recruiting. Altius Sports will also assist in identifying and advising on strategies to support and empower the program's student-athletes across varsity sports." During Monday's quarterly meeting of the Kansas Athletic, Inc., board of directors, Goff said he was "alarmed" by what had taken place with NIL on a national scale during the past six months. But he added that he remained proud of the way KU approached the changing landscape and said he thought it would be critical for KU's athletic department to continue to evolve in the space. - Topeka Capital Journal
