We don't have state taxes in Texas, but..

We have INSANE property taxes, which may be even worse because when they want more of your money, they just raise your property value as much as they want and your taxes go up 20-30%.. at least with state taxes they don't usually make huge jumps like that.. but, they sure do property-tax-wise.. and, of course they tell you that's for your benefit since your property value is rising.. but if you sell it, to take advantage of that I crease, they tax the snot out of your property sale..
