The media tends to look at their own hype, team-oriented accomplishments, stats, and records in selecting players who make the hall.
Some who make it are questionable - some who should get in based on personal accomplishment, unique skill and style of play, respect earned over the course of a career, lasting influence on the game, leadership, inspiration and example - regardless of team record - don't make it.
The star a player hitches his wagon to (via the draft or trade - the sheer dumb luck factor) has more to do with his entry into the hall than what's in his wagon and how he pulls it.
How bright the team's star shines in media-hyped games is too often the determining factor as the media picks and chooses who gets in and who doesn't. If you want to look at stats alone, Roman Gabriel threw for a better completion percentage and more yards over the course of his career than Terry Bradshaw. Bradshaw threw for more TD's and ran for more yards.
I remember the fan debates of that era: Who is the better quarterback? Tossup.
It has always baffled me that Bradshaw, who deserved the HOF, got in - and Gabriel, who also deserved the hall, didn't.
