Is this extra cap space from the Boom and AD restructure for particular players or just cap flexibility? Secretly I am hoping they need the space for either an already behind the scenes for an edge to be acquired in trade or for Clowney/Chase. They also can now go get Spoon or Gilmore if they consider him an upgrade over the next 3 years at the opposite CB position and maybe JJIII as well. We will see.
A few things to unpack here.
I think Boom was a salary reduction, not a restructure. Saves the same on this years cap but doesn’t kick money down the road. Great move by Rams.
The restructure on AD was deemed necessary for current and perhaps modest future moves in FA.
Don’t think Rams consider either Clowney or Chase Young good locker room fits. I think they sign some 3rd tier edge FA to compete with Hoecht (might even be a slight upgrade, at that) and they plan on drafting the future starting edge early, possibly with 19 pick.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for a major FA CB, although Witherspoon might be a slight possibility. Money is drying up. Here again, I think they will use the draft to get a starting CB opposite DW.
That’s my take as of today, anyway.
