Keeping Tutu makes no sense.
He is clearly our #4 WR at best.
He can't return punts.
He can't play any role on ST's.
He would be a downgrade at WR3 should one of the starting 3 go down. How the Rams feel about Tutu had as much to do with resigning Robinson for $5mil as it did how good they feel about Robinson.
So, at WR4 with no STs role his main job to warm a bench. Not good. And I think you'll see the Rams let him go, even if he stays during training camp as an emergency break the glass Just-in-Case. However, the Rams do usually help players out by cutting the ones that they clearly know no longer have roles so they can perhaps sign on with another team.
We need to draft a good PR who also plays WR. He'll be cheaper and at least offer some utility. Hated to see Powell go. He's the mold for what I'm talking about.
This is a weakness of McVay's. That bottom of the roster he does have a predilection for favoring guys with upside vice right now ST impact. And it's part of the reason why he's gone through ST coordinators. And I think it's also why he elected not to fire another poorly performing ST coach. Personally I think he got that call wrong, but maybe not, we'll see. Either way I agree with you that Tutu adds nothing.
All Tutu did this year was hold off Robinson's impact as they played the kid who had the higher draft status. Because Robinson was flashing in camp. But come the season, well, we have this amazing talent we drafted in round 2 we gotta try to get him going. All that did was hurt the offense as we would have been better off with Robinson in that role day one.
But re: returner I'd add two of them. Seriously. They really need to prioritize this stuff. McVay is only hurting himself by not allowing for that third phase to win him the occasional game. Because sometimes that occasional game is a big one, or a game that leads to a big one.
