If you remember, at that point in the 2023 Draft there were 7 QBs taken over less than 40 picks in the late 4th/early 5th rounds.
I wasn't really high on taking Bennett either. I preferred Haener from Fresno State (who went the pick right before Bennett) and Tune from Houston (who went 11 picks later to Arizona) as a project QB.
But the Rams were far from alone in scooping up mid-round QBs then. They just didn't pick the right one, which at that point in any Draft- especially with QBs- you have about a 1 in 10 shot anyway.
The
bigger mistake the Rams made was immediately inserting him as the QB2. Sorry but ANY QB taken at that stage should be a QB3 for their rookie year. They're not going to be ready to be the guy if the starter goes down.
