What was the downside to going for it on 4th down?
Field position didn't matter to the Lions at that point. When they got the ball they were going to try and run out the clock (unless the Rams had gone ahead) at whatever position on the field the ball was.
The Rams punted and the Lions took over on their 17. Had the Rams gone for it and gained no yards, the Lions would have been on their 44.
There was no downside to the Rams to go for it. The upside was they'd have one more play to keep the drive alive and maybe win the game.
