We hear this constantly from the draft gurus. This is a good class, this is a bad class. And the truth is, no one has any idea how it will turn out 2 or 3 years down the line when these picks are asked to be top level NFL QBs. And, good-class/bad-class is relative. I don't see ANY great college QBs coming out that have done it for at least 2 years. Just some pretty good ones. And, of course, the ones that seem to get top billing get that billing because of highlight reel running....not pinpoint passing, or cerebral QB play.
Even more, every year some OK college QBs have a stellar year and suddenly they are deemed elite.
I flat don't believe in the "good-class/bad-class" scenario. And I hope neither does Snead. I do believe in the quantity of quality players at one position or another that happen to be coming out in any given year, but that more has to do with how deep into the draft you can get a good player at a specific position. Not how great any particular player is.
The Rams need to take the BPA at the time they draft in round 1 of QB, OL, DL, or CB . Maybe even WR if there is a really excellent guy who has been super productive at the college level. And guy who is really dynamic and likely to be a tough match-up. That could even be a special TE like Bowers. And the teams drafting before them will have a lot to say just who is there for the Rams to choose from. And, I also know that teams look ahead a couple of rounds and see how many guys they like will be likely to be available for them.
Yes, the draft is a crapshoot, especially for QB’s in the 1st.
But wouldn’t you rather take that crapshoot in a deep QB class rather than a shallow one? That’s what it comes down to, really.
Another thing. To be a serious playoff team one needs to have a good QB. There are almost no exceptions to this rule.
So, acquiring a good QB is Job One. Without such a QB nothing else much really matters.
