But more often than not it is execution that is the problem. I blame McVay too for forgetting about the run, but this recent stretch of fans laying everything on him is a joke. We would be a 2 win team at best if we didn't have him and that includes his playcalling.
All that aside I'm fine with him giving it up. Just think this entire thing is being so badly overplayed it's become comedy.
I've always viewed criticisms of play calling like this........a play that works is a good call. One that fails is a lousy one. Simplistic view, but I don't think it's far off.
For instance the fourth down end around call to Kupp in the Super Bowl. If that gets stuffed it's the worst call ever and gets panned by Ram fans (probably including myself) forever. However it worked so it was a creative call that worked. I never liked the call but loved the result.
Precisely. There are certainly down/distance calls that would be stupid but there are times to make those calls. And the players executing or not generally determines whether it works. All it takes is one guy grossly whiffing on his responsibility to blow up a play.
This is also why McVay wins so much. He gets the most from his players in terms of getting them to mentally buy-in and do their best snap to snap. Rams don't have many instances of guys loafing like some other teams. And generally his players are locked in and know the play and what they're doing. Lot of fortunes turn in this league on all that stuff but it still comes down to players executing.
And great players can change everything too. You can scheme up and call a great play and it's executed almost perfectly but a great player will blow it up at times. But point is playcalling is the easy thing to blame. And as always it is way overdone with fans, particularly this season where we have a team full of holes overperforming in a lot of respects thus far vs the schedule.
