I think the whole point of hiring LaFleur & Wendell, of bringing in Munchak as a consultant. of incorporating gap blocking schemes into the offense, of drafting Avila, and of trading for Dotson was to make the running game an integral part of the Rams offense.
There already has been a conscious effort to enhance the run game. Admittedly, it doesn't always translate to the field - old habits apparently die hard - but I think at an academic level McVay knows the Rams need to run. They just have to remember that when the game is underway.
I wonder if LaFleur (or somebody) has enough pull with McVay to slap him across the face (figuratively) and say 'you need to run the ball more'.
edit: Right on cue, this is an excerpt from Jourdan Rodriguez' latest piece in The Athletic.
"The Rams have also transitioned into a predominantly gap scheme running game, a far departure from McVay’s outside zone roots. They currently lead the league in gap scheme run usage and rank at the bottom of the league in zone run percentage. This is, in part, a reaction to the light box and odd front schemes that have taken over the NFL — which, ironically, has been partially due to McVay’s offensive success."
