It’s really about drop off in talent and having the insight or luck to hit big in the first round.
The low rounders McSnead have gathered over six years have been at par, IMO, with any other teams’ mid-to-low round picks.
But I’m not aware of any team that consistently hits on their 1s—-and they kind of have to due to the higher salaries first rounders command. So—not having data, or any reports that have been run—I’d be shocked if 80% of first rounders are tendered for that extra year. I say that because my gut sense is that there’s not a lot of occasions when teams use the franchise tag. (I know that doesn’t necessarily correlate, since not all second contracts are franchise tags.)
