I think the odds were somewhat against Noteboom winning the starting LT job all along- one because of rehabbing that injury and two because frankly Jackson was a better OL last year and also handled the LT job throughout last preseason pretty well.
I don't doubt it was a genuine open competition but I would guess they knew Jackson was the guy 2 weeks ago. And so essentially they said, OK, AJ is the guy so let's get Noteboom some work at other spots besides LT. And that, combined with moving Bruss to RT full-time, was why he started getting some reps at RG.
I would call him their 6th man right now but the thing is also that McClendon is gaining fast on the outside. He could be the top swing tackle sooner than later (and can also play some RG).
