Spots that are open would be those which have nobody of note who can do the job on the current roster. Spots that have options are those where we have guys who might be able to step up, whether or not you like them in those roles.
Here's the spots that are open:
Backup QB
Backup RB (bellcow role)
Blindside Edge
DL (5T or 1T depending on where they see Brown playing)
CB (outside hash)
S
K
P
LS
That's 4 starting roles, two backup roles, and 3 ST roles.
It is possible all 3 ST roles are filled via UDFA and late round picks. Backup RB can be had anywhere in draft all the way to UDFA. Backup QB is possible into mid to late rounds, as a lot of these guys are probably destined for backup jobs if they stick on NFL rosters. Starting S can be found well into drafts and the Rams have done that successfully.
Starting roles Edge, DL, and CB are best drafted in the first few rounds.
It's gonna be tight because you simply aren't gonna hit on all your picks. But we also have UDFAs as well and chances are there will be a ton in the Rams camp as there are more jobs to win there.
Also you have post-draft trades. Cutdowns. So I'm thinking we start the season with a couple questionable areas, those being staffed by nobodies where we are crossing our fingers. But that by itself doesn't mean we are doomed.
Our season still comes down to OL health, QB health, WR development, and how well the coaches can get our young defense all on one page.
