When I was doing 100 guys, I had time to really put scores to guys.
As the Rams traded picks for players, my lists got longer, but yet my time was still the same. So, realizing I'm not a paid scout and lack a ton of stuff teams have, I decided that I would just watch games, make notes and give him a round grade where I thought his athletic profile and performance would fit. Then I would watch post season bowls (shrine, NFLPA and Senior) adjust grades accordingly if needed. Then I would do the same with the combine. I don't worry about bench pressing and 40 times as much as the shuttle, 3 cone, 10 yard split and maybe the jumps (explosive athleticism) and I like the drills. Plus I get a true height/weight. Adjust from there. So my board goes 1st round grade, 1st/2nd round grade, 2nd round grade, 2nd/3rd round grade etc...I don't give 32 first round grades, Same with all rounds, some rounds have more than 32, some less.
Example: 24. Cam Smith is my last 1st round grade, 25. Clark Phillips is a 1st/2nd rounder. His height is the reason he slid down a tad. 70. Sam LaPorta is my last 2nd round grade. So only 24 1st rounders, but then 46ish 2nd rounders.
I'm sorry if that is a bit disappointing. But I'd be lying if gave you some score like 74.6 on Devon Whitherspoon.
And if I'm being honest, once you get past 100 players that most (not all) internet big boards have in their top 150, it becomes a real crap shoot. So I decided I'd give just round grades and hope I'm in the ballpark.
So when looking at my boards, the Rams draft my 67th rated player at 36, its not as bad as you'd think as the 40th ranked guy has the same 2nd round grade as the 67th ranked guy. I do try to sort them how I'd personally draft them as the GM of the Rams. Schmitz is ranked 55, Tippmann is ranked 65. As the GM of the Rams, I like Schmitz more, so he gets the higher ranking.
Does any of this makes sense? I hope so.
