Not with Catln--but that Knox was not a good hire . . . he didn't have
the innovation needed for 90s football.
But I missed on some coaches, too.
I liked Robinson
Didn't like Knox II
was okay with Brooks, but was wrong about him
Didn't like Vermeil, out of the game too long, but I was wrong, and glad I was wrong
Martz - Rams had to do it, he was major reason for '99 and for Warner, but had flaws
Linehan--I thought he was like Brooks--I was okay but not excited
Spagnuolo--excited about him. Loved what he did with Giants...thought he'd turn team around
Fisher-not my favorite, but was okay with him. But IMO he was hired because he was okay coach but had experience moving a team
McVay-liked the hire, is the kind of coach I would have liked in 1992, young energetic - like Steelers got in 1992 and others, youth movement
Was too young, really, but didn't think Knox should have been fired in first place... and was too young to even
know who Knox was in 1973
Allen 2? Again--didn't know what to think, just thought Knox was a good coach with meddling owner in the QB thing
I was not a fan of Knox II, just wish that Catlin his DC in Buffalo & Seattle went with him because he was a top DC, however, Catlin chose to stay in Seattle with Tom Flores & Knox hired George Dyer as his DC in L.A.
I started following Coaches at a young age and continued to research them as a youngster, born in 1966 so the first real understanding of a Ram Coaching Change came in 1978.
I did not want George Allen, felt the Rams needed an offensive innovator and I wanted them to hire Bill Walsh because I liked his offense at Stanford, Carroll Rosenbloom liked Walsh too and in fact was close to hiring him, but at the last minute the Rams agreed to terms with Allen which was a mistake and instead of Walsh the Rams ended up with Sloppy Ray. Malavasi very good Defensive Assistant, but IMO, I knew he was not the answer at HC and Walsh going to SF killed me.
In 1992 I wanted Mike Holmgren, again, so did John Shaw actually, but Georgia wanted to bring back Knox again that was a mistake.
Did not like the Rich Brooks hiring, but my guy back then was Ray Rhodes, so I was wrong too.
Loved the Vermeil hiring, felt that is what the Rams needed and I was happy he was successful. Loved the Martz hiring felt he would be to the Rams, what Joe Gibbs was to Washington, missed it there.
Did not like Linehan, felt he was a Putz, wanted Ron Rivera I wanted Spagnuolo and obviously was totally wrong there. Felt Fisher would get the Rams to 9-7 and into post season, that never happened and I actually preferred Kyle Shanahan over Sean McVay as always, happy to be wrong. That George Allen hiring always bothered me in 1978 Rams were close so to hiring Walsh.
