I agree. And it's great when you hit on a Cooper Kupp with the 69th pick in a Draft. But it's just not, I think, something you can
expect. There always has to be perspective on a player about where they're taken and the historic realities of players in that round. As the 117th pick in 2017, for example, I think WR Josh Reynolds was a good pick.
The 2022 Draft (at least in year one) was bound to be disappointing when (a) they didn't pick until 104th overall and (b) that 104th pick was done for the year in August. Durant did well
for a late 4th round pick as a rookie and now it's time to build on that. They need Lake and/or Yeast to emerge in year two. Williams to be a good 3rd down RB. DT Bobby Brown (another 117th overall pick) to build on what we saw from him the 2nd half of last year. Etc.
If they want to hit on a higher percentage of their picks they need more picks in the top 100-120. Sounds simple but they do. As I mentioned above they have had too high a proportion of their picks in rounds 6 and 7 the past five years. That was fine in 2012-2014 when Snead arrived and they literally needed bodies to help reconstruct the roster. But not in 2023. And in fact they've had a higher percentage of their picks from the 6th and 7th rounds since 2018 (45%) than they did in 2012-2014 (32%).
