Whitworth signed a 3 year deal and his bonus money was spread over 3 years (2021, '22, and '23).

Any salary that was left when he retired was indeed voided as you would expect. But a cap golden rule is every penny a team pays a player must eventually be counted against that team's cap.

Since the Rams already paid Whitworth that bonus money it must still be counted against the cap even though he retired.
