Les Snead and the Rams front office will need to find ways to manipulate the cap again this offseason as the team attempts to bounce back from a rough 2022 campaign. They’re currently $14 million over the salary cap, which will need to change in the next month before the new league year begins.

Taking up some of the ever-valuable cap space is dead money. Put simply, dead cap is money that’s leftover from a player being cut or traded, or in Andrew Whitworth’s case, retirement. According to Over The Cap, the Rams have four players taking up nearly $3 million in cap space due to dead money this year.

Andrew Whitworth: $2 million
Jacob Harris: $249,672
Terrell Lewis: $233,381
Terrell Burgess: $208,073
Total: $2,923,395
In the grand scheme of things, that’s really not a lot of dead money. There are only 11 teams with less dead money on the cap this year than the Rams. The Raiders lead the league in dead money with $29.4 million on the books. Former Rams LB Cory Littleton makes up part of that with his $9.986 million in dead cap, followed by Derek Carr ($5.625 million).

The Rams can’t get rid of this dead money, which is the penalty for cutting or trading players. They’ll just need to work around it and free up enough space to get under the $224.8 million cap by March 15.
