If the value is good then there's a case to be made for it. Certainly not any of our preferences for rounds 2 and 3. But a couple things. One, while Atwell at least showed he can contribute as a situational WR4 or WR5, no one really thinks he's going to be more than that. So he's replaceable. And his contract is such that they'd save almost $800k in cap space if released (or maybe traded somewhere for a 2024 7th?).
And also, Jefferson is in the final year of his deal. I don't see them paying him in 2024 so why not bring an heir apparent in. Plus who knows about Robinson past 2023 ($10.2M in cap saved if released in 2024).
So if, hypothetically, the top quality edge rushers and OL are off the board at #36 and a WR is there that's a consensus top-30 overall prospect.... you have to think about it. And the Rams NEED VALUE picks on day two. They can't afford projects and what-ifs. They need guys that have clear value and are rated higher than where we're picking. WR, CB, S, DT. All options in my opinion.
A recent example I think of is during the 2020 Draft. I was texting with a Cowboys fan friend of mine during the first round that night. Dallas was not looking for or projected to go WR high in that Draft. But Cee Dee Lamb was a clear top-10 player staring at them at #17. So, as they should, they took him. And it's been a wise move.
Same with the Rams. At 36 if the 28th best player is still on the board and he's a WR, take him. At 69 if the 56th best player is on the board and he's a WR, take him.
