My only criticism with the whole thing is why the beat writers, particularly Jourdan can't get to the bottom of it or are not telling us.
My guess is that they knew AD was going to miss a big chunk of the season with his injury and, when the season turned to @#$%& they shut it entirely down and then allowed him to be home with his kids/family and rehab there as a show of good will for his many years of service knowing that it was that lost connection with his family that was his greatest retirement motivator.
Like you said, I doubt his teammates - even one - would question his motives after the body of work he has put in and it allows him to come back with battery pegged to "FULL" and thankful for the organization that allowed him to do that.
Not sure why it would be a problem to say something like that from the Organization (if that is indeed what is going on) but I guess they have their reasons.

They players vote on team captains every year. My money is on AD getting voted in as captain again next year (for the 6th time). And that's all the respect the AD needs.
This stuff about AD doing the dog-and-pony show by standing on the sidelines when he can't even play makes for some decent distraction in a long, tedious offseason. But my guess is that AD is a big deal in that locker room and if he, for whatever reason, though his time was better spent elsewhere I'm confident that not one player questioned his motives, desire, or commitment to them.
Some fans may have a different take. As is their prerogative.
I guess we'll see when the captains are announced.
