They are hamstrung on the defensive side as they have no idea what's going to happen with Morris. Apparently, based on Lafleurs welcome interview they are finalizing the offensive staff.
I am sure McVay has his wish list based on whether Morris stays or not. New DC if needed will probably want input on his position coaches. Also, who will Morris take if he does get the colts gig.
I’ve already suggested a workable Rams solution to this dilemma in another thread.
Simple.
Promote Morris to an impressive sounding job title. One which involves ‘consulting’ but not the day-to-day actual DC duties. Give him a decent but not extravagant raise. Then he waits for Irsay to make some kind of a decision without having to twist in the wind.
This would avoid forcing McVay to fire Morris AND allow McVay to hire the best possible DC still available along with needed Defensive assistants. Clock is ticking loudly right now.
In this way Morris saves face and gets a nice raise.
Then, if Irsay promotes Morris, Kroenke saves a little cash and Rams are already positioned with their various coaches both on O and on D.
If Irsay chooses Saturday, for example, then Morris probably dodges a bullet and is positioned for HC interviews in ‘24 all while avoiding any more embarrassment than what Irsay has put him through already.
The Irsay’s irresponsible conduct has now made such a bizarre Ram move necessary. But after 4 weeks of dithering, it’s time for Rams to take steps to regain the initiative.
Or, am I missing something?
