About trying to win in an SB window - Today
I get the “to be the best you have to beat the best” mindset, but historically easier schedules tend to help teams reach the Super Bowl. In today’s league, parity is so high that even great teams usually can’t just overpower everyone week after week. My concern with the Rams schedule isn’t only SOS. That looks pretty difficult. Luckily teams that look good at the beginning of the season on paper sometimes aren't... I don't really see any of those teams doing tanking but I can keep my fingers crossed... Potentially tough games with the Giants and the Raiders too though... and the Cards are anyone's guess. However if the Rams trade next year's 1 for a star WR... then that is basically the slam dunk, grand slam and hat trick all in one. Because they got their QB they would might have taken next year a year earlier... and still got Stafford a star WR, a TE and an OL... and got possible depth in Daniels. The initial shock had people grasping at straws. Then people tried to accept that McVay couldn't look too happy because he was being sensitive. For me, the most likely thing is that he was mad about something... could have been anything. We will probably never know. Things we know: McVay signed off on the pick and loves Simpson. to get a WR since the QB’s will drop a good player to 13. lol However if I didn’t have a QB I would do whatever I had to do to get one. So I would definitely trade up to 13 for a QB. Higher if I needed to. Crystal ball I would trade up to 13 IF I couldn’t get a vet QB looking to get out of a bad situation… assuming I want that QB… looking at you Burrows. Lol. 1. Another weapon 2. Insurance 3. Keeps options open (other than running right to 13 personnel) 4. Creates new options and stresses the defense. 5. Gives the Rams a WR for the future. Another thing we will probably never know. Could have been McVay felt trading down was acceptable, or couldn't pull the trigger... and who knows what the offer was... ??? What is clear is that they both wanted Simpson and felt like it was the best move for the franchise to pick him at that point. After much reflection and benefit of the doubt, I am good. The strategy to use the 13th pick in the draft for the future is inherently faulty... UNLESS you really feel like you can fill other needs via free agency. Still a bit of hubris but I see taking the chance. You get your QB you would have had to mortgage the farm for next year... but you've solved most of your issues already. Neither of these people know. Jourdan said there were calls and the Rams could have traded back. And now this guy is saying he has knowledge of the Rams trying to trade up and said they liked both Love and Tate. Why would Simpson say they had “secret” meetings? Lol. That said, most people here imo were genuinely trying to make sense of why McVay appeared uncharacteristically sullen, giving short, terse answers in a way that simply isn't his norm. He could just come off a bit different but then I don't know. It wasn't his answers that threw me, it was the body language... something I really hadn't seen before. But it doesn't mean he is weird but different than what I would expect. Would have been fun to see him in horns though. But Styles I think was the guy that intrigued me the most. I'm just saying this is a tough year to have a rookie as a back up. I'd prefer a vet. I rarely criticize players picked in the draft... So much determines a player's success. I always give the benefit of the doubt to the Rams. I will however criticize a philosophy when it's less about football and more about strategy. And that's where I am... well was... its over. We can disagree. And we probably agree a lot more than we don't here. I got the trade back info from Jourdan... not saying its a fact or anything, that's just where I got that info. I would have preferred a vet but I don't see a way around that now... you don't choose someone with the 13th pick and then bring in a vet and the first round pick is 4th string. I really hope not. A QB your team can be mediocre with. But McVay likes him… maybe loves him. I’ve just never been impressed with Cousins but maybe he’s never really had the chance. Maybe with McVay with the Rams, Cousins would have made a better showing. Had the opportunity to trade up a few spots in a window year and decided not to... ok, assuming no one to trade with... So perhaps they don't feel like they need WR's or will trade for one (or two) But I don't feel great about Adams staying healthy or Puka... I think it's difficult to significantly improve without a high pick. Even a late first rounder doesn't really differ from the second round. The Cards... without a QB, you kind of waste a RB. They likely should have taken Simpson I guess. But I've heard good things about Beck. Probably their option 2 if they couldn't trade back up for Simpson. I think the Bears good be special this year. Seems things went offline or something and the war room was dark. Last year we got all the calls immediately. I don’t think there was an overruling or anything. I think Les and Sean are to a large degree instep. But it’s difficult to ignore the tension. So maybe McVay wanted to trade up or trade back? Maybe Simpson was the pick if they couldn’t trade up. I still would have preferred a target for Stafford because I feel like the OL does have some depth. But I would have been absolutely fine with an OL at 13… or really just about any blue chip prospect. Simpson pretty much guarantees that a no QB’s wanted sign at Rams park. I don’t trust that Nacua and Adams will stay healthy… and the Rams obviously have a better look at this… but Nacua seems to be a wildcard now. Rehab? Ok. Just seems like he isn’t someone I would bank a season on… his physical style of play seems a bit risky. And then Adams won’t play… well probably next season. I am hoping Ferguson becomes a target.
