In my backpacking days the hiking boots salesmen would DEMAND that I get full support - arch, ankle, etc... and when I told them I needed no support, and in fact boots made for support were miserable for me... they couldn't accept it.
Fact is: I could hike the entire Appalachian Trail in a pair of $10 Walmart tennis shoes. I don't... .because there are other reasons for good hiking boots... like gore-tex, being waterproof. But I today I buy the most comfortable, (soft), waterproof boots and shoes I can buy... no support needed. - JamesJM
