Two bass drums vs one bass drum

there is probably a hundered different answers to this question huh

I was just looking at a couple of pictures of Matt Frenette , the drummer for Loverboy

some times he uses one bass drumm , some times he uses two bass drums

I figure he's playing the same songs , so why the different drum set ups

is it the size of the venu you're playing in

is one clearer then the others . I'm guessing you could play faster with two

does it really make that much of a difference ?
