Not a lot... maybe, geez I don't know... half dozen times? Maybe a few more than that... but not in a LONG time.
I'm not fond of it. Like you I much prefer live performances. BUT... there is one thing I like better about recording than live performances, and it's no small thing:
I sound a LOT better to myself when listening to what was recorded than i do to myself when playing live. A LOT of that is the sound itself, but some of it is just... hmmmm, how to explain this:
Playing live, performance or practicing, I'll play stuff that 'live' sounds very ordinary to me... not at all very professional.... then I'll hear it recorded and it's actually a LOT more advanced than I thought it was when playing it live. I very rarely play solos... because to my ear behind the kit they sound beginner-ish... then I'll hear it on a recording and while not truly sounding 'advanced' it's a LOT more advanced than I thought when playing it.
Which leads me to this: The most depressing thing about my playing these days has to do with 'aging'.... I don't 'drag', actually... but I find myself slightly behind on the drum strokes...mentally I'm THERE.. but physically there is a lag. Most people would never notice... it's not a lot, but I can hear it and it bugs the hell out of me. - JamesJM
