to know what your band sounded like through an amazing sound system.. normally the opening band doesn't get a soundcheck, so, you know at least the first few songs are gonna be sketchy.. But usually guys running those symptoms are SO good at what they do they can get it cleaned up pretty quick.. its always good to have a non-ass-kissing friend out front to give you an honest opinion..
After the WASP show we got a bunch more shows in Dallas and one of of those dates was at a place called The Ritz, which was this huge club with the stage on the second floor, but an open floor plan so people on the first floor could see the band.. I've mentioned the place before: you had to build a "ladder" from the PA mains in order to get your gear on the stage because there was no stairway to the stage area.. and this place only had a two foot high railing at the edge of the stage and the first band to ever play there had two guys go over the edge with multiple major injuries..
But the cool thing was our regular sound guy couldn't make it, so they brought in a sound guy for us.. turned out to be ZZ Tops former soundman.. that dude had that sound so dialed in so fast.. People there told us we never sounded better and I believed them...
Friendship is like peeing your pants.. Everybody can see it, but only you can feel the warmth..
