I've never seen the Nutcracker either. I've seen bits & pieces, video clips of moments from the ballet, but I've never seen the whole thing in any form: movies, plays, musicals, etc. Interestingly enough, my grandson's current obsession is fairies and ballerinas. And no, he's never seen Nutcracker either. He told me I needed a ballerina Christmas ornament for my tree. He found one online he really liked and I ordered it. Whenever he's here, he always takes time to admire it.
1) Fairies are always shown as being female. If you read up on them, you'll find that fairies can be either gender but they're never depicted that way in art, stories, and books. We can thank Disney for bending the gender in that regard. There are LOTS of fairy costumes for girls/women... but hardly anything for boys/men. Peter Pan wasn't really a fairy (he had no wings), but his clothing is often used as a base for people who want to DIY a fairy costume for boys.
2) Although ballerina is the word used to describe female ballet dancers, I found out that there is no word in the English language for a male ballerina (i.e., Rudolph Nuryev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, etc). Male ballerinas are simply called "ballet dancers". Isn't that weird?
