You should go. In summer MV is really expense to stay on but go in spring or fall and it's much more reasonable. I've actually always just done day trips there from Cape Cod. You can see quite a bit in one day.
And I wouldn't worry about the Jaws fan stuff- the island still embraces it. The store where Brody goes in to buy the paint supplies to make the No Swimming signs still has an Amity sign from the movie in it. The Town Hall ("you all know me, know how I make a living..." ) is often open. The Chappaquiddick ferry. It's all right there. There are walking tours you can take, etc.
The husband of one of my wife's good friends from college is the sheriff on the island- the real sheriff...
