Because it points out how many people are concerned about themselves and care nothing about others. It's the I'm on board so pull up the ladder that has gotten us into so much trouble. I.E. As long as I'm vaccinated and can't get sick I don't care about others. F--k em. Let them get vaccinated or not. I don't care. That's their freedom to decide.
To me, that sums up a whole lot of problems in this country far beyond COVID,
How and when did we get so callous about others.
I'll grant that there is something to be said about having a collective mindset versus only being concerned about oneself as an individual. Thinking about others is a noble ideal.
You ask though when did we get so callous about others? I'll tell you: it was at the very beginning when we were established as a capitalistic system. Capitalism values individualism. This is bigger than us as individuals.
Corporations don't value us; they value the almighty dollar. As a result, trust is low. The vast majority of the people I know who eschew the vaccine have low trust levels either with the government or corporations or both. Do we really believe the government is interested in protecting us or are they most concerned with power, control, and money? Do we really believe corporations have our best interest at heart or are they most concerned with making money?
For many people, the answer to these questions is no, we don't believe in the government or corporations. In this low trust context, people doing what's best for themselves and not caring about how others are affected is a natural result.
How about using reason?
If the virus is not eradicated (which can only be done by mass vaccinations and herd immunity) then the chances for profit and control diminish. If the vaccine is not real then the virus is not contained, which serves nobody's interests.
And btw you don't have to "trust" the government and big business on any of this. They are not the source of either the vaccine or information about it. The global scientific and medical community is.
