Interesting sidenote: He was also in Seven Samurai... although not in a lead role... he was a bandit. Got his start being a stunt man.
Another sidenote: Bought Seven Samurai some time back.... but wasn't paying attention so I got the version without subtitles. It's been sitting on my computer for a couple of years.... but, oh, two weeks ago? I broke down and watched it, start to finish, without subtitles. Guess what? It worked.
