Yeah agreed. Same here.

Sometimes books cannot be directly adapted to the screen. Sometimes the director wants to update or re-interpret it. And sometimes that doesn't work, too....though like you I think it did in this case.

Another example though it's a little less mainstream. The movie Bladerunner (ie. the original from 1982) completely changes the story, so it's less of an adaptation of the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep than it is a creative re-working of it. But I like both.
