How do I remove this screw?

February 05, 2020 03:46AM
Bought my grandson a set of Mighty Pups. They are 6 little plastic puppies, each one has a different super power, each one lights up briefly with the push of a button.... very popular among the toddler and pre-school population. Anyhow, each figure has three LR41 batteries. The packaging states that the internal batteries are factory installed and non-replaceable. At the same time, there are instructions that state you can "use a tool to remove the battery door" and it says to dispose of the batteries properly. The batteries are going to need to be replaced soon. The problem is that the screw on the battery compartment does not have a groove where you can insert a screwdriver. The head is completely smooth! It looks more like a nail and maybe it is. I just can't tell. I have been all over the internet and Youtube looking for an answer as to how to remove the screw without breaking the toy. I've found comments from folks on Amazon.com who have said they replaced the batteries but they didn't explain how they did it. I tried prying with a jewelry screwdriver a little bit to see if I could get some wiggle and the screw doesn't budge. I'm thinking I may need to use an extractor bit (which I've never done). I have no idea if that's a good thing to do when the screw is in plastic and not wood or metal. I'd love to be able to remove the screws that are in there and replace them with different screws so I can use a screwdriver. The Mighty Pups cost me about $35. It's really stupid for the manufacturer to not make it practical to replace the batteries because they way it is now, when the batteries die, the toy is worthless.

Anybody here have any ideas on what I can do to get the dang screws (nails?) out?
