we all know that.
But I think I got the 'joke' part of it...and was referring more to this:
"No what I was referring to was specifically the moneys that come in directly associated with the monarchy"... or maybe I'm missing this as well?
I don't think those 'drawing cards' you listed would change a bit, as far as drawing tourists, whether the Monarchy was existent or not.
I'm not into the Royal's, as you know... but I wouldn't use the word 'quaint' in reference to them, or more specifically their 'history'... because it's just that... 'history'... no different than any other historical fact be it England, Germany, France, Brunei or Tonga.
BUT... with that said... absolutely I know that for some a living, breathing, actual "Queen" does have fascination for many... I live with one who is that way.
"History" and "quaint" are similar terms, since "quaint" means history that tries to live past its moment in the present. I didn't say you didn't get the joke, I thought instead you got too serious about the money bit which was just there to serve the joke.
Anyway. One of the ways the UK defends having a monarchy, and the great expenses associated with it, is to point out how it specifically, the crown itself, draws tourist interest. That's a fact of English life, that they say and believe that. I am inclined to believe it myself.
Having said all that, I like English monarchy movies. Like the The King's Speech. But I also know that every single one of them messes the actual history up, and often unbelievably badly. A more minor example comes in the King's Speech, where Churchill is presented as an early ally of Bertie's and against his brother Edward The Abdicator when in fact that was far from the case. But I guess you can't make an English historical drama with Churchill in it and cast him as being on "the wrong side."
Lionel Logue : Oh, surely a prince's brain knows what its mouth is doing?
King George VI : You're not well acquainted with royal princes, are you?
